My dimmer works! But of course there are things I could refine. I'm thinking of adding hysteresis to the comparator since the strobe effect isn't always a totally sudden on and off, there seems be some 'bouncing' that makes it kind of fade in and out. And maybe adding hysteresis to the main 20kHz dimming part would make it dim better and more stable-y? And THEN I could add a switch that makes the modulation do a triangle fade in and out instead of a hard pulse. Like a class D amp! BUT THEN I would need to decide how I want to change the controls, do I want to add a 'modulation depth' knob? (Yes I am a huge synthesizer nerd, it is how I understand the world) Will I even use any of these features??? Maybe I should just be happy that it actually works after four complete failures.

I was working on my LED dimmer/strobe circuit last night and I... blew up a 556. oops. The circuit works by making a 20kHz "triangle" wave and comparing it to a set voltage from the DIM potentiometer. This makes a PWM signal, which is buffered? by the transistors and fed to the gate of the MOSFET which turns the LEDs on and off. The OTHER side of the 556 is doing the same thing, but its speed is also adjustable, from ~0.5Hz to 30Hz. The output of its side of the comparator is connected to the DIM potentiometer, so it grounds the reference voltage, because it's an open collector. This turns off the dimmer entirely. BUT it seems to behave weirdly. If you have any suggestion, let me know? And yes, it would have been lots better to just use a MCU, BUT I wanted to see if I could actually make it work. AND YES I know there are online schematic drawing things but they pissed me off so I just did it by hand :P

Okay here's my new recipe I invented! Potato wedges. Nice and crispy, sort of. Fried egg. SautΓ©ed onion and mushroom. Homemade gravy made from bacon fat, homemade veggie stock and some of the potato water. Cottage cheese. Kind of like a loco moco crossed with poutine?? It was honestly really good, especially the gravy!!! I think it looks better with the gravy on top of the cottage cheese.
Next time, I would make the wedges cubes instead of... wedges, and maybe try to make a hamburger patty with oatmeal, onion and mushroom, kind of like a meatloaf or scrapple sort of thing, to be more in line with actual moco locos. If you have a good name for this, let me know!
